Ref: No. 676. The Green Man Inn, Fownhope, HerefordshireRef: No. 676. The Green Man Inn, Fownhope, Herefordshire. In 1485 it was known as “The Naked Boy”. During the civil war, in 1645 the Roundhead colonel, John Birch stayed there after the siege of Goodrich Castle before moving on to capture Hereford. There is a mural in The Naked Boy Restaurant of Tom Spring, Prize Fighter of all England, (1823-1824). One of his fights lasted for over three hours and went on for 77 rounds.

Ref:No.684.Old Fownhope.Ref:No.684. Old Fownhope, Herefordshire. Prosperous village with lime burning kilns and bark production for tanning, the latter being transported along the river on the numerous barges that were operating out of Fownhope.

Church of the Holy Rood, Mordiford, Herefordshire   (Original watercolour 9" x 5.75") The bridge over the River Lugg, played an important roll in the battle of Mordiford Bridge during the civil war when the Scudamores of Holme Lacy fought for the King.

Fownhope, circa 1900.  Inspiration for this painting came from an old sepia photograph, the thatched cottages on the left known as the "The Hovels" are long gone. The one at the end was pulled down to enable the road to be widened. What a waste, as the road was never altered.

Of the eight oak pillars, the North-West corner post rests on the base of an old Preaching Cross, the two large stones opposite are "Bargaining Nails" the origin of “Paying on the Nail”.

Ref: No. 687. Holme Lacy House, Holme Lacy, Herefordshire.Ref: No. 687. Holme Lacy House, Holme Lacy, Herefordshire.   (Original watercolour 13.5" x 9.5"). Originally the home of the Scudamores. Of Norman descent, they settled here in the 14th century. It was rebuilt about 300 years ago and, after the death of Frances Scudamore in 1820, it became a hospital. It is now used as a leisure complex.
